Neal A. Maxwell

"Within the swirling global events- events from which we are not totally immune- is humanity's real and continuting struggle: whether or not, amid the cares of the world, we really choose, in the words of the Lord, to "care for the life of the soul." Whatever our anxious involvements with outward events, this inner struggle proceeds in both tranquil and turbulent times. Whether understood or recognized, this is the unchanging moral agendum from generation to generation."

The Hip Hop Solution

Since I've been getting home late (with school starting again), I haven't been running. Living in California, I've opted out of late night runs by myself. I'm not really at ease thinking I did that all my years at BYU. So, until I overcome the warm, comfort of my bed in the early morning hours, I've realized my alternative. Dance Off the Inches-Hop Hop Party! I've never been one for these video/DVD workouts (other than 8-Minute Abs... always been a fan of that one) but I'm now enjoying a hip hop party every night at around 10pm. Visitors are welcome.

I'm back at FIDM; back to playing the Little-Engine-That-Could mental game: "I think I can. I think I can. I think I can." I've graduated up to the Collection Development Class, the last cairn before my portfolio class. And subsequently, a class known for nightmare design projects. I'm not one to get things done in a timely manner. I procrastinate. But today in class we did an exercise that gave me hope. The teacher divided us up into groups of four and gave us an hour to create a group (a cohesive set of five garments- inspired by a chosen theme- that can be worn interchangeably with each other) complete with an illustration and a fabric and color plan. I know what your thinking. Crazy, right? Impossible, right? But I did it. I'm glad we did that in class today because it was a boost I needed. When push comes to shove, I can bleed designs right onto my paper and just get it done. Don't think; just draw, Charlotte.

YAY you can do it, Charlotte! Maybe you should come visit us again for just the right pick-me-up you need. A little late-night Wii laser hockey, a day at the National Art Gallery, dancing (to hip hop exercise tapes of course) in the living room with Kate. Trust me, it's just the right medicine. Oh yeah and I am hanging on to the little-engine-that-could mantra too. At least for you other people's lives aren't at stake... as you timidly and a little uncertainly chant the mantra... in the Target parking lot... only two decibels below the pair of raging tantrums you're trying to ignore... Someday I'm really afraid I might be the death of my children. Inadvertently of course.

That sounds like fun! Wish I could come dance to hip hop exercise tapes. :) It was so good to see you while you were in Utah! I wish we could have visited longer though!
